Project Summary/Motivations

A VR experience that will use LeapMotion to simulate running a control panel in a Russian military bunker, where the player has to run a set of increasingly complicated tests on radar pings to determine whether or not they are approaching missiles.

It will subtly parallel the events of the 1983 Soviet nuclear false alarm incident, focusing on the idea of narrative storytelling through the environment. As per the titular event, the player will ultimately end up at a situation where they have to make a call on whether to retaliate to a seemingly positive reading on an incoming missile.

Demo Contents

The user will be in a bunker-like room with a control panel in front of them, along with various decoding equipment, including analog knobs/sliders, a keyboard, radio, and clipboard. A radar pings to inform of an incoming object that will need to be properly identified by reading in encrypted messages from the radio and looking them up through controls. A misidentified object or taking too long causes a failure, where the scenario will restart.

The goal is to portray a bleak, stressful atmosphere through both gameplay and the environment, which ramps up over the course of the three scenarios. The focus is to explore the titular event through our narrative, to give an impression of the tensions and stress on both sides of the Cold War. The LeapMotion is being utilized to further immerse the user in this role.
